Edin Numankadić
Edin Numankadić (Sarajevo, 1948) is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in Sarajevo, Department of Art Education, and studied the History of Yugoslav Literatures at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. Since the early 1970s, he has been an active participant in the artistic scene of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.
Throughout his career, his work has evolved through various phases, ranging from color field painting and analytical painting to objects, assemblages, and conceptual forms. He is one of the founders of the artistic groups 1+1+1, Prostor–Oblik (Space–Form), and KAMMEN, which played a significant role in the development of contemporary art in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Numankadić has held more than fifty solo exhibitions and participated in over three hundred group exhibitions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. He represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Venice Biennale twice: in 1993 with the project Witnesses of Existence and again in 2003 as part of the national selection. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Sixth of April Award of the City of Sarajevo and the French Order of Arts and Letters (Knight). He is also one of the founders of the Ars Aevi Collection and has served as its long-time advisor. He lives and works in Sarajevo.
